Do you know Sennacherib and Rab-shekah, or someone with their dispositions? 2 Kings chapters 18-19 talk about them.
Understanding the Characters
In any story of adversity, the personality traits of the people involved can greatly impact the outcome. Take, for example, King Hezekiah, Sennacherib, and Rab-Shakeh. Hezekiah, the resolute king of Judah, was faced with a fierce threat from Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, who sought to conquer Jerusalem. Rab-Shakeh, Sennacherib's chief spokesman, served as the voice of intimidation and manipulation. This passage provides us with three key pointers on effectively handling our enemy and the bullies or trouble he sends into our lives.
Respond Strategically to Attacks
While many might feel compelled to retaliate against bullies or enemies in a moment of passion, Hezekiah teaches us about the importance of a strategic response. Instead of launching into discord, he sent his representatives to seek help and counsel from Isaiah during this dire situation. He did not respond to Rabshakeh, and he advised the people of Jerusalem not to speak to them either. In essence, don't talk to the bully; choosing the right response can carry more weight than any verbal answer that you can give. Prayer was the weapon of choice for Hezekiah in this situation.
Staying Firm and Trusting Your Strengths
The most significant aspect of King Hezekiah's response to the threats from Sennacherib was his unwavering faith. When faced with relentless insults and intimidating demands from Rab-Shakeh, Hezekiah kept doing what had worked in the past; he was a man who trusted God and followed God's commandments. He prayed, and he also consulted with the prophet, Isaiah. In your own life, trust god, follow the commandments of God, and whenever challenges arise, be like Hezekiah and pray to God for deliverance. Stand firm in your beliefs and do not let anyone shake your foundation.
Know Who to Seek Help From
Also essential in the story of Hezekiah is the idea of seeking support when facing insurmountable challenges. There are times when the pressure from external forces can feel overwhelming, much like Hezekiah felt with the vast Assyrian army surrounding Jerusalem. He wisely turned to someone he knew to be a true prophet of God for assistance. Don't hesitate to reach out when facing your demons; it can offer a fresh perspective and unity in times of distress. Recognize that admitting vulnerability and asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.
Three Major Points
1. Hezekiah gave all the silver and gold he had to Sennacherib, even stripping it from the doors and pillars of the sanctuary.
2. Sennacherib was not satisfied; he sent Rab-shakeh and others to Hezekiah, and they began to make threats against Judah. Hezekiah prayed and consulted the prophet Isaiah.
3. Hezekiah did not have to give them an answer to their threats. They were dealt with by the hand of the one that Hezekiah and Isaiah prayed to.
In conclusion, learn from the experiences of Hezekiah, Sennacherib, and Rab-Shakeh. Stand firm in your faith and respond prayerfully to trouble. You can conquer your challenges by being strong in the Lord and the power of His might, as we are told in Ephesians 6:10, and emerge victorious against those who seek to intimidate you.
