A Weapon That Provides Comfort
The scriptures are not mere poetic words. The Word of God is also here to encourage and strengthen us through the tough times, but we need to be familiar with the Word. The Word of God is timeless (Psalm 100:5, 1 Peter 1:25) and 1 Thessalonians 2:13 tells us that the Word works effectively in those of us who believe.
God’s Word is a sword of warfare that is sharper than any double-edged sword (Ephesians 6:17, Hebrews 4:12), and as we read the Bible we find that the same Word that is a weapon and part of our gear for spiritual warfare (Ephesians 6:10-18) brings us strength, peace, joy, and comfort through the knowledge of God, His love, power, and dominion. John 1:1 tells us “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God”.
Jesus, our witness, leader, and commander (Isaiah 55:4), prayed to the Father for His disciples and for those of us that believe on Him through the word that they preached (John 17:15-20). In that prayer, He asked God, our Heavenly Father to sanctify us through His truth which is His Word, and to keep us from evil. Although this prayer for us to be kept from evil has already been prayed, in John 16:33, Jesus told us that we will have tribulation in this world. But he also advised us that we should not be discouraged; because He has overcome the world.
In God’s Word we find courage to face our tribulations and faith (Romans 10:17, 1 John 5:4) to believe that we will overcome just as Jesus overcame. It is through the Word that we experience life and light while we are in the world (John 1:4). It is through His Word that we overcome the world (1 John 2:14). We also find the weapons to fight with, but we also find comfort and peace in His Word. 2 Corinthian 1:3-4 says Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation... Philippians 4:7 tells us that the peace of god that passes all understanding can keep our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Let us continue to make an effort to read, hear, understand, and do what the Word says (James 1:22) and let this Word abide in us (Colossians 3:16). If we do this we will be as Psalm 107:43 says: Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the Lord. We may not understand all that we experience; we may not see what lies ahead of us, but we can trust in God’s wisdom and His lovingkindness. Isaiah 46:4 says And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.
So, may our hearts trust in God’s wisdom and His lovingkindness and may we choose to rest in the comfort that He provides through His Word for us while we continue fight the good fight of faith. Amen!
